You may ask why we recommend that you replace your tyres when the tread depth is less than 3mm, even though the legal limit is 1.6mm. The reason is that we have your safety at heart. Many safety campaigners tried to persuade the government that 3mm should be the legal limit, because the stopping distance on wet roads increases considerably when the tread depth is 1.6mm. It could make the difference between hard braking and an accident. Here's a video showing the difference.
